All about the Izzone, now in its 15th season

Michigan State’s easy 74-39 win against Bowling Green on Saturday wasn’t perfect – Tom Izzo says his team is a little tired from their tough early season schedule – but did have one of the benefits of playing at home. Stellar fan support.

Like other rowdy, fervent and notable student support groups – if you’re a hoops school, you’ve got one – the Izzone’s notable for its volume and size. More than 3,100 students line the court, all with the intent on giving the Spartans a distinct home-court advantage.

“Michigan State rarely loses at home, and I think that is in part due to the Izzone and how loud we actually are when you come to a game here,” says student Justin Wojtkowiak, one of the Izzone’s co-directors.

That’s from this delightful feature from the Lansing State Journal, which detailed the group, now in its 15th season. (Called Spartan Spirit before Izzo became coach in 1995.) It covers how Izzo perceives the section (be loud, but be proper) and what students must do to join.

And actually, the best part’s this video the paper produced. Not sure other rival schools are going to enjoy it (if there’s an Orange Krush feature out there, send it along), but it’s a fun slice of college life and the college game.
