Cal’s 5-point half not even good enough for a record

How does one spin offensive futility into a good thing? You don’t. You simply joke about.

That was the only option after Cal trailed Notre Dame 21-5 at halftime. The Bears lost, 57-44, and provided yet another reason for anyone watching the game to simply wish they were out shopping on Black Friday.

“I was trying to do the math. I’ve never had 21 points at halftime and been up 16,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said afterward.

The one solace for Cal? It didn’t set a record. That still belongs to Savannah State, which was outscored 48-4 by Kansas State during a Jan. 7, 2008 loss.

Ah, does that game bring back memories. It was part of a two-week stretch when Penn, Savannah State and St. Louis all tried to out-do one another with a series of putrid performances.

We can only hope Cal’s game doesn’t signal another one…
