As Villanova preps for Tennessee in the NIT Season Tip-Off finals Friday night, let’s use it to give thanks for one of the summer’s fabulous stories – when Corey Fisher scored 105 points in a single game.
People weren’t sure if the Villanova guard really did it at first (I wanted to believe it right away, even if it did seem doubtful), but slowly and surely all the details came out. The 6-1 Fisher was in New York City, playing in a pro-am summer league. He got hot in one game, had 71 by the end of the third quarter and started thinking about triple digits.
It’s still damn cool.
“It was a good feeling, a lot of people still talk about it,” Fisher told the AP in a fun feature, “but if I have a bad game, people are REALLY telling me about it.”
That hasn’t happened thus far. Fisher’s play has carried over into the season as well. Through five games, he’s averaging 18.4 points a game and sports a 5-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. The odds of him hitting 105 again, however, are zilch.
Which is fine. If nothing else, it’ll prevent ‘Nova coach Jay Wright from throwing out one-liner after one-liner again.
“The first thing I thought was, ‘Oh my God, I’d better call our compliance staff and make sure everything was on the level,’” Wright said upon hearing of Fisher’s performance. “Then it was like, ‘If you scored 105 in a summer-league game, the guy he was guarding probably scored 103.’”
