D-II team scores 154, 157 points in first two wins

West Liberty isn’t messing around. The D-II school out of West Virginia has scored 154 points and 157 points in two blowout wins this season.

For those who struggle with math, that’s 155.5 points a game. And that’s absurd.

The Hilltoppers averaged 101 points a game last season and finished 29-3 overall, but are on another level now. They beat Lock Haven 154-48 and Point Park 157-89. The starters sat for the second half against Point Park after scoring 98 points in the first half. (You can see video here.) The D-II record for margin of victory is 116 set by Mississippi College against Dallas Bible in 1971.

“I sure haven’t been trying to embarrass anybody,” West Liberty coach Jim Crutchfield told MetroNews Talkline. “Our goal is just to outscore the other team. We’ve never, ever talked about how many points we want to score. We’ve never talked about records or points. That’s never been our philosophy.”

Crutchfield further clarified things in a statement, chalking the scores up to great shooting, saying he was even a little bit “awed” by it.

“The question, of course, is can we play well on the nights when we’re not shooting well because you know those nights are going to happen but I’ll just enjoy this while it lasts.”
