Renardo Sidney still wants to be 6'3"

Mississippi State held their Maroon and White scrimmage on Saturday, and as you would probably guess, all eyes were on big man Renardo Sidney.

Most came away relatively unimpressed. Sitting out for a year didn’t seem to have anything to do with it, either. Let me explain. This line is from a February, 2009, entry into Sidney’s recruiting profile on ESPN.com:

Last season he was too perimeter-oriented and launched too many 3-point shots.

And here is a quote from Brandon Marcello, who covers MSU sports for the Clarion Ledger and who was at the scrimmage on Saturday:

The sophomore, who must sit out the first nine games of the season due to an NCAA suspension, flashed more frustration than skill on his way to 10 points. He finished 4-for-13 from the floor and attempted six shots beyond the arc.

So despite having a full year and a half off to think about his game and his development, Sidney still considers himself a 6'10", 275 lb, three-point shooter? That’s not a good sign for the Bulldogs. They have plenty of three-point shooters, and those three-point shooters already on their roster don’t have the size and the skill to be a dominating post presence in an SEC that doesn’t have a ton of great big men.

“We’ve got to get him down to the block more. There’s no question about that,” Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury said afterwards.

Listen to your coach, Renardo. It might actually get you to the NBA.
