Will Aztecs finally break into that AP Top 25?

San Diego State’s headed for an historic Thursday. Well, semi-historic.

When the AP preseason poll is released, the Aztecs are sure to be one of the 25 teams listed. When that happens, it’ll be the first time in school history.

“We are now perceived to have a program. When they start talking about good programs, I think we are now mentioned in the same breath as some of the others, and that makes me feel good,” coach Steve Fisher told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “And obviously, the fact that we return five starters from a team that won 25 games should catch everybody’s attention.”

If voters are smart, that is. (Some are ahead of the curve.)

The Aztecs - who return all five starters from last season’s NCAA tournament team that won 25 games - were listed among the “others receiving votes” in the coaches’ poll. That’ll should be remedied thanks to an aggressive campaign by the school’s SID, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Ed Graney.

“I’m fairly certain they have a sports information director who will kill more trees than in the Black Forest with press releases on the team’s accomplishments.”
