Wake’s Woods charged with 3 counts of assault

Wake Forest’s Tony Woods was charged with assault on Labor Day in what appears to be a particularly nasty attack on a woman.

According to WXII12.com, Woods, a 6-foot-11, 245-pound center, was arrested and charged with three crimes: assault while inflicting serious injury, assault on a female and assault while inflicting serious injuries with a minor present.

Arrest warrants show that Woods kicked and pushed a woman who he lives with in the presence of his one-year-old child. The woman suffered a fractured spine, the warrant says.

Woods’ first court date is scheduled for Sept. 30.

New Wake Forest coach Jeff Bzdelik is out of town recruiting. The athletic issued this statement:
We are still in the process of gathering facts regarding this incident. We will cooperate with the campus and local authorities as they investigate this incident. Wake Forest University and the athletics department have policies and protocols regarding these matters and those will be followed,” WFU Athletics Director Ron Wellman said.

If convicted, Woods could face up to 20 months in prison.
