A downside of unlimited night and weekend minutes

Someone’s a fan of “The Wire.”

The NCAA is investigating the Tennessee men’s hoops program for excessive telephone calls and the use of unauthorized phones to contact recruits, according to an ESPN report. Officials reportedly have already met with coach Bruce Pearl and associate head coach Tony Jones.

Volunteers athletic director Mike Hamilton told ESPN via text message that he “Would not comment on any issues in the case until an NCAA let of inquiry is received.”

(For hoopheads, Hamilton sounds a little stressed because the football program is already under investigation.)

Coaches have strict rules regarding when and how many calls are allowed to recruits, which has gotten many a coach into trouble (hello? Kelvin Sampson anyone?). I’m sure Pearl’s staff has stretched this rule. Most good recruiters do.

But they better hope they didn’t stretch too much.
