Would Wojo ever be the face of Duke hoops?

Mike Kryzewski’s in Turkey, coaching the U.S. hoops team. That leaves associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski responsible for Duke basketball right now.

Those responsibilities include conducting skill workouts for the players when they return to campus, helping players adjust to campus life and organizing recruiting activities for the fall.

“Anything he normally would do while I’m here,” Wojciechowski told Sporting News, “that’s basically what I’m doing.”

Those all sound perfect for Wojo. What I can’t wrap my head around is if he were eventually the face of Duke basketball.

Coach K isn’t going anywhere, but he is 63. When he retires, will Wojo be a serious contender for the job? Or will it be impossible to take him seriously? I know Duke fans love the guy for his devotion to the program and intensity, but would they see him as head coach material?

To his credit, he no longer goes by Wojo. That nickname was for his playing days - now 12 years in the rear view - and for those of us who remember him from those days, slapping the floor on defense and running the Blue Devils offense. He’s been on Coach K’s staff since 1999 and has been an associate coach since 2008.

Still...Coach Wojo? Hmm. Maybe in a few more years it won’t sound so strange.
