Lavin’s master plan? Using MSG’s locker rooms

Steve Lavin’s busy rebuilding St. John’s basketball program by boosting its brand and bringing in some notable recruits. One more piece of the puzzle? Having the Red Storm use the locker room at Madison Square Garden.

Lavin told the New York Post he’s trying to leverage every bit of the famed arena’s appeal. Instead of using an auxiliary locker room as it has in the past, now St. John’s could show off new digs to recruits.

“I want the players to know that this is a special building in college basketball history,” Lavin told the paper. “We want to take playing here to the next level.”

Among the planned tweaks: a red St. John’s carpet, players’ names above the lockers and lush chairs. Sure, it’s not going to be the main factor in recruiting, but it sure can’t hurt. But here’s my question? Did previous coaches not have the juice to pull off something like this?

Or did they just not care?
