Dominique Sutton wasn’t playing around. He wanted to play closer to his girlfriend and two daughters, and he wanted to do it soon.
So after three seasons at Kansas State where he was a defensive stopper and solid starter (7.8 points and 5.8 rebounds a game last season), Sutton focused on the North Carolina schools. And the Durham native found a spot at N.C. Central.
“A lot of bigger schools want me to sit out, but I want to go to a place where I can play right away,” Sutton told the Raleigh News & Observer.
Playing time shouldn’t be a problem. Provided his hardship waiver is approved by the NCAA, Sutton will be the Wildcats best player from day one.
“I was ecstatic when Dominique contacted us to express his interest in transferring to North Carolina Central University,” N.C. Central coach LeVelle Moton said in a statement. “We are excited to have a student-athlete of his caliber as a part of our men’s basketball program.”
Even better for Moton is that Oklahoma transfer Ray Willis also is headed to N.C. Central. Willis won’t be eligible until 2011, but gives the WildcatsEagles - who join the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference this season - two players who should allow them to vastly improve upon their 7-22 record from 2009-10.
