John Wooden (1910-2010)

John Wooden died Friday. The legendary UCLA coach was 99.

College basketball won’t be the same.

The sport’s never seen a greater winner. His 10 NCAA tournament titles - all during a 12-year span - may never be matched given his closest active competition, Mike Krzyzewski, has four. It’s hard to believe to Coach K will even come close.

There’ll be more coming in this space later, but for now I encourage you to read a marvelous tribute from one of our writers, Mike Ventre, who details what made Wooden so unique.

And I’ll leave you with this Wooden quote. I’d like to think we’re all capable of becoming as great as Wooden, but I think he was playing on a different level than the rest of us.

“Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

R.I.P coach.
