North Carolina’s depleted frontcourt got a boost last week when Alabama forward Justin Knox elected to transfer to Chapel Hill. Another boost may be on the way.
James McAdoo, a 6-8 power forward who committed to UNC last fall and is scheduled to graduate from high school in 2011, may enroll a year early.
“It’s something he’s considering, and that’s about as far as I’ll go with it,” Ronnie McAdoo, the player’s father, told ACC Now. “It’s something he’s considering, but I don’t want to get into any details about it.”
If McAdoo does enroll early, he’d follow the growing trend of players graduating high school early. Andre Dawkins did so at Duke last season, while Matt Carlino and Scottie Wilbekin are thinking of doing the same for Florida and UCLA this season.
It’s not an easy transition, either.
McAdoo won’t turn 18 until Jan. 4. Even if he does adjust to the more rugged college game (he’s 205 pounds, and isn’t a slightly built forward like John Henson, but he’s not Patric Young, either), it’s hard to say if he’ll be ready for college life.
Thus, it’s not a no-brainer decision. UNC could use the additional frontcourt help, but it’s doubtful Roy Williams wants McAdoo to simply enroll early because it’s possible.
Then again, if McAdoo is even close to the player his uncle was, he’ll be ready.
