Turns out the NCAA isn’t all about money. It occasionally shows heart, too.
The Texas A&M athletic department was allowed to assist the family of Tobi Oyedeji, a recruit who died from injuries suffered in the car accident early Sunday morning.
That meant allowing A&M coach Mark Turgeon and staff to visit the family, attend a benefit basketball game and attend the funeral. Even better, A&M was allowed to provide financial support to the Houston-area family for the “funeral and medical expenses at this difficult period of time.”
A basketball game played Wednesday night between two Houston schools (where others also are doing their part) also will benefit the family.
Coaches normally have a strict NCAA-mandated time period in which no contact is allowed with recruits. A&M also wouldn’t have been able to promote the charity event on the school’s website.
Instead, the NCAA bent the rules in favor of doing the right thing in a family’s time of need.
Bravo, NCAA.
