Wall excelled on court and in classroom

As John Wall prepares for his new life as a Washington Wizard (unless the No. 1 pick is traded), consider these two tidbits about his freshman year at Kentucky:

  • He finished with a 3.5 GPA during his second semester
  • He says he would’ve attended college without the one-and-done rule

“People thought I was just going to look over college basketball and not take it seriously, not do my school work and just look to the draft,” Wall told ESPN’s Andy Katz. “But that wasn’t my goal or my mindset. I went to Kentucky to be a better player. Coach [John Calipari] and [assistant] coach [Rod] Strickland helped me get better. The college experience jump-started me to the NBA.”

(If Kentucky and Calipari are smart, they’ll frame that quote.)

If there’s an ideal one-and-done player, Wall was it. He went to college because he wanted to. How many (likely) No. 1 picks from the last 10 years can say that?
