Purdue transfer Ronnie Johnson is headed to Houston

Ronnie Johnson, who started for two seasons as the point guard at Purdue, has decided that he will be transferring to Houston.

He made the announced on twitter on Thursday afternoon:

We’ll go ahead and ignore the fact that it’s the University of Houston and not HU for now because Johnson was pretty productive with the Boilermakers. He averaged around 10 points and four assists both years that he was there. He’s a diminutive, lefty point guard with some serious quicks, but he also played on two teams that didn’t do much of anything in the Big Ten.

Johnson will have to sit out the 2014-2015 season but he will have two seasons of eligibility remaining starting in 2015-2016.

Report: IUPUI hires Memphis ass’t Jason Gardner

It was announced earlier this month that Todd Howard would not return as head coach at IUPUI next season. Non-BCS level programs will sometimes wait until the Final Four weekend to make a decision, using the event as a semi-clandestine interview session, but athletic director Michael Moore did not want to wait an extra seven days — ESPN’s Jeff Goodman is reporting there is a verbal agreement between IUPUI and Memphis assistant Jason Gardner to be the program’s next head coach.

A former guard at Arizona, and an assistant under Josh Pastner for only one season (he also had a stint on Loyola Chicago’s bench), Gardner is an Indiana native, and Moore clearly has confidence that while he has only been a coach for several seasons, he is ready to lead his own program for the first time.

One benefit of this possible hire (since it has not been officially announced by the school) is how it affects the transfer of ex-Purdue guard Ronnie Johnson. While a Tiger, Gardner had been gauging Johnson’s interest in transferring to the AAC program, and now that he is at IUPUI, he could make a pitch from one Indiana native to another to restart his college career at the Summit League school.

Purdue’s sophomore starting point guard Ronnie Johnson will be transferring out of the program, the school announced on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson averaged 10.8 points and 3.7 assists this season.

“Ronnie has expressed his interest in transferring from our program and we have granted him his release,” head coach Matt Painter said. “We wish Ronnie the best of luck as he continues to pursue his education and basketball career.”

Purdue was just 15-17 this season and finished in last place in the Big Ten. They will not play in the postseason this year and went to the CBI last season. Johnson’s brother Terone was a senior on the Boilermakers this year.
