Boise State adds talented point guard to 2015 class

With leading returning scorers Anthony Drmic and Derrick Marks being seniors and Mikey Thompson being a redshirt junior, adding pieces to the backcourt was a priority of sorts for the Boise State program. And this fall head coach Leon Rice and his staff have done that, with Malek Harwell committing in September and three-star point guard Paris Austin making his pledge Saturday afternoon.

Austin announced the decision via his Instagram account, picking Boise State over Montana and Saint Mary’s.

Austin attends Bishop O’Dowd HS in Oakland, California, where he plays alongside five-star big man Ivan Rabb. Those two helped lead O’Dowd to the finals of the CIF Open Division tournament this season, where they fell to a Stanley Johnson-led Mater Dei team. The 5-foot-11 Austin saw his profile rise throughout the spring and summer, playing his grassroots basketball for the Dream Vision program.

Austin averaged 10.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in adidas Gauntlet play, teaming up with fellow Division I commitments Chase Jeter (Duke) and Bennie Boatwright (USC) and other talented prospects. Austin gives Boise State a good distributor at the point guard position, which should work well with a shooter of Harwell’s caliber as the Broncos put together their future backcourt.

In addition to the aforementioned Thompson, Montigo Alford, Dezmyn Trent and Chandler Hutchison are the guards who will have eligibility remaining when Austin and Harwell arrive on campus next year.

With the 2015 class lacking a lot of point guards, Oakland native Paris Austin will be highly viewed in July by college coaches looking for a floor general.

The 5-foot-11 Austin was solid this spring on the adidas Gauntlet and also stood out at the Pangos All-American Camp when NBCSports.com was in attendance a few weeks ago.

Austin told NBCSports.com at Pangos that he has scholarship offers from Florida State, Tulsa, Utah State, San Jose State, Boise State, Loyola Marymount and Pacific, and Creighton, Wake Forest, Texas and Cal have recently been involved and showing interest.
