We can get our “the SEC is terrible” jokes warmed up early this season.

Ole Miss came back from a double-digit first half deficit to force overtime against Charleston Southern. They were playing without star guard Jarvis Summers, who fouled out late in regulation, but Martavious Newby looked like he would end up being the hero, hitting a three with 43 seconds left to give Ole Miss a 65-64 lead. After a pair of turnovers, Charleston Southern took the ball out under their own basket with 8.2 seconds left.

And this is what happened:

That’s close, but when you look at the view from behind the back board, you can see that the ball is out of Cedrick Bowen’s hands before the red light goes on:

This is bad news for the Rebels, who were supposed to be one of the teams in the SEC that would compete for an at-large bid. Losing games like this at home -- CSU is a good mid-major program, but they aren’t a Harvard or a Belmont at this point -- is even worse for Ole Miss considering the public perception of the conference they play in.

Throw in the fact that Georgia lost to Georgia Tech and Tennessee got smacked by VCU, and this was not a good day to be a fan of the conference.
