Key Iowa State piece to remain in the draft, per report

It appears as if Iowa State commit Emmanuel Malou will be keeping his name in the NBA Draft.

That’s according to ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla -- the world’s leading expert on international basketball players -- who tweeted as much on Wednesday morning.

Malou is an athletic albeit raw 6-foot-9 forward that last played for Yuba CC in Arizona. A native of Melbourne, Australia, Malou is a shot-blocker that shot better than 47 percent from three for Yuba. He was expected to be an instant impact addition for Steve Prohm this season as the Cyclones look to replace Georges Niang, Jameel McKay and Abdel Nader.

Malou is not projected to be a first round pick. He’s a likely second round pick that could very easily end up going undrafted. Part of the reason that he’s remaining in the draft is that there is no certainty that he would be able to get cleared to play this year by the NCAA.

Iowa State is going to be in the mix for an NCAA tournament berth simply because they still have Monte’ Morris on the roster and the Big 12 looks like it is going to be down this season. Morris is that good and that effective at making the guys around him better. Nonetheless, losing Malou is going to hurt for a team that really does not have all that much talent beyond Morris.
