The status of star point guard Edmond Sumner is still in doubt as No. 10 Xavier prepares to host DePaul at the Cintas Center on Tuesday night.

Sumner was stretchered off the floor three minutes into Xavier’s loss at Villanova on New Year’s Eve when Kris Jenkins landed on Sumner’s head in a nasty collision on a layup attempt. The redshirt freshman was healthy enough to return to Cincinnati with the team that night, but he was entered into the concussion protocol and has yet to be cleared to play.

“He’s getting very, very close. He has no signs when it comes to the protocol so he’s going to be in sooner rather than later,” Mack told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I don’t think he’s been ruled out. He saw the doctor earlier this afternoon. It’s to my understanding that he still won’t be ready for (Tuesday) night.”

Sumner is averaging 11.0 points. 3.2 boards and 3.1 assists this season.
