VIDEO: DeAndre Bembry leads Saint Joseph’s past Richmond

After a slow first half that saw him go scoreless, Saint Joseph’s star junior guard DeAndre Bembry woke up in the second half and made some big plays down the stretch as the Hawks won their Atlantic 10 opener with a 77-73 road win over Richmond. The win is the seventh consecutive victory for Saint Joseph’s, who moves to 11-2 on the season and 1-0 in Atlantic 10 play.

Bembry finished with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists and drilled the game-winning jumper with 27 seconds left after previously missing four consecutive free throws that could have helped put the game out of reach. Following the go-ahead jumper, Bembry grabbed a defensive rebound in traffic on the ensuing Richmond offensive possession and iced the game with two free throws with two seconds left.

Also playing a good game for the Hawks was senior Isaiah Miles, as he finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds.

Richmond (8-5, 0-1) led, 37-32, at halftime but couldn’t hold on in the second half once Saint Joseph’s got more comfortable offensively. Junior ShawnDre’ Jones (22 points) and senior Terry Allen (21 points) paced the Spiders in the loss.
