Xavier’s Edmond Sumner has been one of the breakout stars of this young season, a redshirt freshman point guard that has played his way into the NBA Draft conversation.

But less than three minutes into No. 6 Xavier’s visit to No. 16 Villanova, Sumner was involved in a nasty collision at the rim.

He was on a breakaway when Villanova’s Kris Jenkins tried to block his layup attempt. Jenkins’ legs were taken out and the 6-foot-7, 240 pound forward appeared to landed directly on Sumner’s head, slamming it against the floor.

Sumner appeared to be knocked out cold on the court. We’re posting video of the collision, but we won’t be showing you him knocked out:

Sumner was taken off the floor on a stretcher after spending 10 minutes on the court. The broadcast did say that he had movement in his extremities before he was strapped to the backboard and that he was taken to a local hospital.

We will update this post as more information comes available.

(UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: A Xavier spokesman told NBCSports.com that Sumner is walking and talking, and head coach Chris Mack announced that Sumner has not only been released from the hospital, but that he will be allowed to travel back to Cincinnati with the team.)
