Temple used solid defense, balanced scoring and timely 3-point shooting as they went into Cincinnati and upset the No. 22 Bearcats, 77-70 on Tuesday afternoon.

Entering the game with a 5-5 record, the Owls (6-5, 1-0) earned their biggest win of the season as they went 45 percent (10-for-22) from 3-point range. Temple struggled to shoot only 30 percent from distance entering the game and Daniel Dingle (14 points) and Devin Coleman (14 points) hit timely 3-pointers with under 2:15 left to give the Owls a final push.

Quenton DeCosey led Temple with 19 points while Josh Brown also added 11 for the Owls.

Cincinnati had 19 points from Troy Caupain while Octavius Ellis added 12 points and Farad Cobb chipped in 10. In a back-and-forth game, the Bearcats could never seem to get ahead of Temple and the whole game seemed to be within five points for either side.

This is the first loss that Cincinnati (10-4, 0-1) has suffered this season to an unranked team as all of the Bearcats losses before came to good teams like Butler, Iowa State and Xavier. It’s games like this where it shows that Cincinnati needs someone to step up and be a go-to scorer in tight games for them to pull away.

Nobody on this team averages more than 12 points a game and it leads to questions about who should be taking big shots in critical times. Cincinnati is still a great team who is balanced and tough on defense but they could use a guy who becomes more of an Option A scorer.
