Tulane’s freshman class will have one less player this season, as one of the program’s signees has decided not to enroll for personal reasons.

Monday the school announced that 6-foot-6 small forward Kipper Nichols has been released from the National Letter of Intent he signed in the spring. The Ohio native was supposed to be part of a recruiting class that boasted a total of seven newcomers, including grad student Jernard Jarreau (Washington), but “personal and family reasons” ultimately led to Nichols requesting the release and Tulane granting it.

“Due to personal and family reasons and after multiple discussions with Kipper and his mother, Tanicia Porter, we are granting this request,” Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson said in the release. “We supported Kipper being close to his family during a difficult time this summer and continue to support him for the same reasons in honoring this request now.”

The Green Wave, who finished their debut season in the American Athletic Conference with a record of 15-16 (6-12 American), have to account for the loss of two of their top three scorers in Jay Hook and Jonathan Stark. However, Tulane’s leading scorer from last season (Louis Dabney) returns, and LSU transfer Malik Morgan will be eligible after sitting out all of last season.
