With the roster pared down to 12 players earlier this week, United State U19 head coach Sean Miller and his staff are preparing the team for the FIBA u19 World Championships which are scheduled to begin June 27 in Heraklion, Crete.

One of the players on the roster is guard Isaiah Briscoe, a Kentucky signee rated amongst the best players in the Class of 2014, and on Thursday night the New Jersey native suffered an injury during practice.

A source confirmed to NBC Sports that Briscoe suffered a head injury during the session, and with the team scheduled to depart Friday he needs to pass a concussion test in order to make the trip. News of Briscoe’s injury was first reported by CBSSports.com.

The United States doesn’t lack for players who can handle the playmaking responsibilities, with incoming college freshmen Jalen Brunson (Villanova) and Jawun Evans (Oklahoma State) making the roster, and they also have depth on the wings with Josh Jackson, Terrance Ferguson, L.J. Peak, Jayson Tatum and Allonzo Trier manning those spots.

But even with those options, to lose a player of Briscoe’s caliber would hurt should the injury result in his being unable to make the trip.

Of the four finalists who didn’t make the team two, Virginia Tech’s Justin Bibbs and Vanderbilt’s Riley LaChance, were perimeter players with forwards Brekkott Chapman (Utah) and Vince Edwards (Purdue) being the others.
