Tennessee is losing a backup point guard option as walk-on redshirt freshman Braxton Bonds will transfer, according to a report from the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The 6-foot-1 guard sat out last season after transferring from Liberty. Bonds spent one week at Liberty before leaving the program due to homesickness and took an offer to walk-on at Tennessee from previous head coach Donnie Tyndall.

The Volunteers self-reported a secondary violation last week after it had been reported by WBIR that Bonds was called twice by Tyndall’s Tennessee staff. With Bonds already enrolled with Liberty, Tennessee didn’t have permission to contact Bonds from Liberty.

Bonds had a chance to be a reserve point guard for a team that only has incoming freshman Lamonte’ Turner at the position at this stage, but Bonds will continue his college basketball career elsewhere. Braxton is the nephew of former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds.
