VCU head coach Will Wade has managed to add another piece to his first recruiting class, as on Thursday Philadelphia native Samir Doughty announced his decision to join the Atlantic 10 program. The 6-foot-3 point guard originally signed a National Letter of Intent to attend St. John’s, but made the decision to reopen his recruitment in the aftermath of the school changing head coaches.

“I’m extremely proud to announce that I’ve committed to VCU,” Doughty posted via Twitter.

Doughty was granted a release from his NLI in late April, resulting in multiple schools looking to reel him in. In the end it was VCU that did what needed to be done, and he’ll join fellow freshman Gerron Scissum, junior college transfer Ahmed Hamdy Mohamed and grad student Korey Billbury as newcomers to the VCU program.

As a senior at Math Civics & Sciences HS in Philadelphia, Doughty averaged 24.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per contest.

VCU won’t lack for experience, especially in the perimeter rotation that Doughty will join. Amongst perimeter options Melvin Johnson returns for his senior season, and the Rams also welcome back juniors JeQuan Lewis, Doug Brooks and Jordan Burgess and sophomore Jonathan Williams. Billbury joins the fold as well, making he and Johnson the lone players entering their final season of eligibility on the VCU roster.
