After two seasons in Storrs, sophomore point guard Terrence Samuel will be transferring. News of the move was announced on Thursday, and after sitting out the 2015-16 season at his next school the Brooklyn native will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Last season Samuel averaged 3.6 points and 2.5 rebounds in 20.8 minutes per game, struggling with consistency on the offensive end of the floor. Samuel shot 38.7 percent from the field and did not make a three-pointer last season, and improving his perimeter shooting was something he needed to do this offseason.

Yet even with the offensive issues Samuel’s defense led to him earning playing time not only in 2014-15 but also during the Huskies’ run to a national title the season prior. In wins over Villanova and Iowa State he reached double figures, and his emergence as a defender allowed head coach Kevin Ollie to essentially play three point guards at times with Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright being the others.

With Samuel’s departure UConn (for the time being) will have one less guard in its rotation in 2015-16. Incoming freshman Jalen Adams is a player many expect to take over the role left vacant by Ryan Boatright running out of eligibility, and options such as Rodney Purvis, Omar Calhoun and Sam Cassell Jr. returning from last season’s team.

UConn is also one of the schools in the running for former Seton Hall guard Sterling Gibbs, who visited Pittsburgh earlier this week and is scheduled to visit Ohio State this weekend.
