GAME OF THE DAY: Niagara 105, Quinnipiac 100 (2OT)

Zaid Hearst managed to force overtime with a tip-in of an Ousmane Drame miss with two seconds remaining in regulation, but that only delayed defeat for Quinnipiac by ten game minutes. Chris Casey’s Purple Eagles won by five in double overtime, with Dominique Reed posting 20 points and ten rebounds and Ramone Snowden adding 18, eight and two steals. Six players played at least 42 minutes in this game, with Hearst (26 points, seven rebounds) playing 48 of a possible 50.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1. Michigan State 76, Michigan 66 (OT)

Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rakhman and Spike Albrecht scored 18 points apiece but it wasn’t enough for the Wolverines, who fell by ten in overtime at Michigan State. Denzel Valentine led all scored with 25 points and Branden Dawson adding 19 and ten for the Spartans, who remain part of the five-team logjam two games behind Wisconsin (in the loss column) in the Big Ten standings. Michigan will be without point guard Derrick Walton Jr. for “the foreseeable future,” which means that players such as Abdur-Rakhman and Albrecht will have to step forward on a consistent basis.

2. Florida State 55, No. 23 Miami 54

With a 16-point halftime lead the Hurricanes looked poised to rebound from their 20-point loss to Georgia Tech earlier in the week. Then Jim Larrañaga’s team went cold and Florida State took advantage, outscoring Miami 30-18 in the second half. Montay Brandon stepped forward for the Seminoles, scoring 18 points and grabbing six rebounds to lead the way. Sheldon McClellan scored 13 but Angel Rodriguez remained in his slump, scoring eight points on 3-for-11 shooting.

3. No. 11 Utah 67, USC 39

The Runnin’ Utes rebounded from their disappointing loss at UCLA Thursday night, putting the clamps on the Trojans at the Galen Center. Jakob Poeltl, who’s been dealing with ankle inflammation of late, led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds but the story for Utah was their defense. USC shot just 26.5% from the field, and they finished the game with more turnovers (15) than made field goals (13). USC scored just 12 points in the first half.

STARRED

1. Chavaughn Lewis (Marist)

The Red Foxes entered the weekend 1-9 in MAAC play. They’ve now won two straight, and Lewis was the star of their 75-67 win over Canisius as he posted 35 points (14-for-16 FG), six rebounds and three assists.

2. Jordan Sibert (Dayton)

Sibert scored 29 points and grabbed five rebounds in the Flyers’ 101-77 win over Fordham. Archie Miller’s team is now 7-2 in the Atlantic 10, one game behind No. 14 VCU in the loss column.

3. Nigel Williams-Goss (Washington)

Sam Singer’s three in the final seconds gave California the 90-88 win, but Washington’s sophomore point guard put forth a very good floor game. 31 points (11-for-17 FG), six rebounds, five assists and no turnovers for Williams-Goss.

STRUGGLED

1. Kevin Johnson (Cincinnati)

Johnson shot 1-for-8 from the field (0-for-7 3PT), scoring two points in Cincinnati’s 50-46 loss at East Carolina.

2. Jordan McLaughlin (USC)

McLaughlin struggled mightily in the Trojans’ 67-39 loss to No. 11 Utah, going scoreless on 0-for-7 shooting and committing three turnovers.

3. Omar Calhoun and Rodney Purvis (UConn)

Calhoun and Purvis combined to score five points on 2-for-12 shooting in a 70-68 loss at Houston, and the final score is a bit deceiving.

NOTABLES

  • Cincinnati didn’t build on the momentum gained from their win over UConn Thursday night, losing 50-46 at East Carolina. The Bearcats didn’t make a field goal over the last 8:39.
  • UConn lost 70-68 at Houston, with the Cougars picking up their first win in American Athletic Conference play. Ryan Boatright scored 26 of UConn’s final 28 points to lead a furious comeback, but they didn’t compete at the level required for the first 30 minutes of the game.
  • Manhattan built up an 18-point halftime lead in their 87-76 win at Monmouth, but they gave up 52 second-half points in doing so. The win pulls the Jaspers (8-4) even with the Hawks in third place in the MAAC, two games in the loss column behind 9-2 Iona.
  • Oakland moved to 6-2 in the Horizon League with a 96-80 win at Youngstown State. While teams such as Cleveland State, Green Bay and Valparaiso have received most of the attention. Greg Kampe’s Golden Grizzlies are in the mix as well. Corey Petros led the way with 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
  • North Dakota State is now 7-2 in Summit League play after winning 64-62 at Western Illinois. The Bison have won four of their last five, and they’re tied with South Dakota State (8-2) in the loss column atop the conference standings. The Bison won the first meeting January 4, and the rematch is scheduled for Valentine’s Day.
