Report: SMU assistant coach takes indefinite leave

Larry Brown

SMU third-year assistant coach Ulric Maligi has taken an indefinite leave from the program, according to a report from Billy Embody of Pony Stampede.

Embody confirmed with SMU Sr. Associate athletic director Brad Sutton that Maligi’s leave is happening and Sutton commented that this situation is a “private matter.”

“He’s on leave. We’re going to respect his privacy while he’s away,” Sutton said of Maligi to Embody. “That’s all we have to say. Again, it’s a private matter.”

According to Embody, Maligi is on paid leave and it’s looking likely that the assistant coach will be on the move at the end of the season. The assistant was not on the SMU bench on Sunday against UCF and Embody also reported that Maligi is not with the team in Philadelphia for the Mustangs’ Wednesday AAC game at Temple.

Assistant coaches can shift jobs with regularity, but Maligi is a noted star recruiter in the state of Texas and would be a big loss for Larry Brown’s staff if he parts ways with the school. Maligi was the point man on SMU sophomore Keith Frazier, who was a McDonald’s All-American, as well as Emmanuel Mudiay before he opted to play in China.
