Manhattan head coach Steve Masiello had fooled UMass with several baseline out-of-bounds plays throughout the course of the game, and as the officials reviewed the time on the clock -- which ended up being 0.8 seconds remaining -- Masiello drew up this buzzer-beating alley-oop. Emmy Andujar to Rich Williams sent the Jaspers’ game against UMass to overtime at 61-61 after the Minutemen had fumbled their out-of-bounds play that would have essentially clinched the game.
Notice the design of the play. Shane Richards, Manhattan’s top 3-point shooter, sets the screen on Jabarie Hinds, freeing up Williams. Derrick Gordon wasn’t focused on switching to the cutting Williams, he was making sure Richards -- who was popping to the wing -- wouldn’t get a pass for an open, potentially game-winning, 3-pointer.
If you’re scoring at home, the 2014-15 college basketball season is five days old, and we’ve seen two buzzer-beating dunks.
UMass went on to win 77-68 in overtime.
