Minor league baseball team to hold ‘Mark Emmert Fan Appreciation Night’ July 2

Not only did Friday mark the end of two days of testimony for NCAA president Mark Emmert in the Ed O’Bannon lawsuit in Oakland, Calif., but the day also featured a promotion put together in honor of the much-maligned leader of collegiate athletics.

The Lake County Captains, a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, announced plans for “Mark Emmert Fan Appreciation Night” which will be held on July 2. Among the benefits fans will be able to receive are the opportunity to receive tickets to a future Captains game provided they remain present through the first three innings.

Also of note is that four lucky college students will win an “all you can eat” wristband and tickets to a future game, with the giveaway meant to honor the recent change in rules that allows schools to provide athletes with unlimited meals and snacks. And if a fan wants to change their seat during the July 2 game they’ll be allowed to do so, provided they wait for an inning before making the switch.

There are other prizes fans can win during “Mark Emmert Fan Appreciation Night,” and the franchise has also invited Emmert to attend the game. Minor league baseball is always good for quirky promotions (see: Bill Veeck Sr.), and this one is outstanding.

Utah picked up its center of the future on Monday as four-star center Jayce Johnson pledged to the Runnin’ Utes, a source confirmed to The 7-foot Johnson recently cut his list to Cal, Colorado and Utah with the possibility of reclassifying to the Class of 2015.

Regarded as the No. 67 overall prospect in the Class of 2016, Johnson will look to attend Utah in December as a walk-on who will redshirt. While Johnson likely won’t play this season, he does give head coach Larry Krystkowiak another big man to use in practice to go against sophomore center Jakob Poeltl. A solid long-term prospect, Johnson has a good frame to add weight and he’s also skilled finishing with both hands. Utah now has its replacement for Poeltl if he opts to leave for the NBA after the season and he gets an extra semester to work with the program.

Johnson is coming off of his official visit to Utah this weekend as he joins junior college guard Jojo Zamora in the Class of 2016.

South Carolina debuted some new uniforms early this week as the school is going with a fresh look and three color ways.

They’re also going to with the “Carolina” branding this season, but I think these new uniforms look pretty cool.
