Tony Gwynn passed away on Monday morning.

The San Diego Padres legend was 54 years old, succumbing after four long years battling cancer.

Anyone that has even the faintest sense of baseball history knows that Gwynn will go down as one of the greatest hitters that ever lived. He wasn’t just a baseball player, however. It’s a little-known fact that Gwynn did not play baseball his freshman season at San Diego State, instead opting to focus on running the point for the basketball team.

He joined the baseball team as a sophomore, but still was dedicated enough to the basketball team that he was named all-WAC in two different seasons. He still holds the school record for assists in a game (18), a season (221) and a career (590). As a senior, he ended his career by scoring 16 points and 16 assists in a loss to New Mexico. That game came on a Saturday. That Monday, he suited up for the baseball team and notched the game-winning RBI in both games of a double-header.

RIP Tony.
