The Maryland men’s lacrosse team saw its season end one-game shy of a national championship game with an 11-6 loss to Notre Dame.

That sort of NCAA tournament run, even an NCAA tournament appearance, is what Maryland basketball fans have been looking for during Mark Turgeon’s head coaching tenure. As Dan Martin of CSNWashington.com notes, Turgeon used the success of the university’s lacrosse teams as a way to reassure his fans that the basketball team is striving to reach similar heights.

Will be tuned in pulling for @MDTerpsLacrosse & @MarylandWLax to bring back 2 national championships to College Park!

I know our fans are hungry to see @TerrapinHoops win a national championship - we are headed in the right direction toward that goal

Maryland has failed to reach the NCAA tournament in each of this first three seasons in College Park. That puts enormous importance on the 2014-2015 season, which has not gotten off to a good start. The program has seen a mass exodus this spring with Nick Faust, Roddy Peters and Seth Allen among the five transfers.

Turgeon will look to combat those losses with returnees Dez Wells, Jake Layman and Evan Smotrycz along with incoming point guard Melo Trimble, one of three four-star commits joining the program.

Maryland’s road back to the NCAA tournament moves to a different location. The Terrapins enter their first season as a member of the Big Ten Conference this fall, projected to finish in the bottom half of the standings in College Basketball Talk‘s Way-Too-Early Power Rankings..
