Wake Forest and new head coach Danny Manning picked up an important late commitment for the 2014 class on Monday afternoon as Florida native and guard Mitchell Wilbekin committed to the Demon Deacons via Twitter.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Wilbekin was formerly committed to Manning at Tulsa before re-opening his recruitment once Manning took the job at Wake Forest. The younger brother of former Florida point guard Scottie Wilbekin, Mitchell was offered scholarships by Wake Forest and Virginia this spring and committed to the Demon Deacons after taking an official visit to the school over the weekend.

Wilbekin was scheduled to visit Virginia early this week, but cancelled his visit and re-committed to Manning at his new program.

A three-star prospect according to Rivals, Wilbekin averaged 15 points, 2.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game and was the Sunshine State Independent Athletic Association Player of the Year during his senior season at Rock School.

The commitment of Wilbekin is big for Wake Forest because his pledge in the 2014 class helps offset the loss of former top-100 point guard Shelton Mitchell, who decommitted from the Demon Deacons last week.

While Wilbekin isn’t the floor leader that Mitchell is, he is a more well-rounded shooter and scorer and could get immediate playing time for Wake Forest if he can knock down shots while running some offense.

Wilbekin joins 6-foot-3 guard Rondale Watson in Wake Forest’s 2014 class.
