In need of a player to add depth to his perimeter rotation heading into the 2014-15 season, Buffalo head coach Bobby Hurley landed a verbal commitment Saturday from College of Central Florida guard Rodell Wigginton. Wigginton announced his decision via his Twitter account.

Wigginton, who committed to Ohio back in October, became available when former head coach Jim Christian moved on to accept the open head coaching position at Boston College. As a sophomore at College of Central Florida, Wigginton averaged 14.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He shot 52.8% from the field, and his best offensive performance of the season was a 34-point outing in a win over Florida State College at Jacksonville in late-January.

Buffalo loses three of its top five scorers from last season’s MAC East title team led by forward Javon McCrea, who averaged 18.5 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game and earned MAC Player of the Year honors. The Bulls also lose guards Joshua Freelove (13.5 ppg) and Jarod Oldham (8.5 ppg, 5.3 apg), with the former being an Honorable Mention All-MAC selection.

Forward Will Regan (10.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and guard Shannon Evans (8.5, 3.3 apg) return, but with the personnel losses listed above there’s certainly room for other players to step forward. Wigginton will look to be one of those options and he’s the sixth commitment in Buffalo’s 2014 recruiting class, with center Raheem Johnson being the other junior college transfer.
