Even before Monday night’s National Title game was set and a champion was crowned, the 2014 Final Four became a memorable one. Midway through the second half of the national semifinal between Kentucky and Wisconsin the official attendance was announced.

On Saturday, 79,444 fans were inside the AT&T Stadium in Arlington for the two Final Four contests, a new record for a college basketball game.

Tonight’s attendance is 79,444, breaking the all-time Division I men’s basketball attendance record. Previous mark was 78,129. #FinalFour

Kentucky, one of the four teams remaining, was part of the previous attendance record. In 2003, 78,129 fans were in attendance for a December, non-conference showdown against Michigan State inside Ford Field in Detroit.

Kentucky won that game 79-74.
