Late Night Snacks: UNC holds off Notre Dame; T.J. Warren goes for 41 points in win

GAME OF THE DAY: North Carolina 63, Notre Dame 61

This game looked like it wouldn’t be very close at halftime, as North Carolina led 41-27, but Notre Dame made it a game thanks to a 22-5 second-half run and a more aggressive approach on the defensive end. The Tar Heels rallied in the game’s final minutes, however, and held off the Irish as Marcus Paige’s block at the hoop with under four seconds left thwarted a potential tying bucket.

I have more on this one here.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

1) North Carolina State 81, Pitt 75

T.J. Warren got going for 41 points to lead the Wolfpack to an ACC win over Pitt. It was Warren’s eighth 30-point game of the season and he was 16-for-22 from the field on the evening. Pitt, meanwhile, has dropped four of six games and continues to have problems defeating solid competition.

Rob Dauster examines Pitt’s NCAA Tournament resume in Monday’s edition of Bubble Banter.

2) Seton Hall 71, Xavier 62

Xavier took a bad loss to its tournament resume on Monday with a road loss at Seton Hall. Despite 28 points from Semaj Christon, Xavier didn’t have enough to match Seton Hall after the Pirates jumped out to a 32-20 halftime lead. Also of concern for the Musketeers, center Matt Stainbrook leaving the game and not returning due to a knee injury.

3) Oklahoma State 77, Kansas State 61

The Cowboys put together another strong performance on Monday night as they won on Senior Night in a balanced effort. Phil Forte led the Pokes with 23 points but Marcus Smart played a tremendous overall floor game, going for 18 points -- on 5-for-8 shooting -- six rebounds, five assists and three steals while also helping hold Marcus Foster to 4-for-16 shooting from the field.

I have more on this game here.

STARRED

1) Michael Weisner hit a late three-pointer and helped Montana outlast in-state rival Montana State, 53-50, as the Grizzlies have now won four straight games. Montana continues to hang two games back of Big Sky leader Weber State.

2) Jeremy Ingram had 17 points to lead North Carolina Central to a 64-57 overtime home win over Savannah State. The win improves the Eagles to 24-5 and 14-1 in the MEAC.

3) Conference tournament play is underway as Lafayette topped Loyola (Md) and Colgate bested Navy to open the Patriot League Conference Tournament.

STRUGGLED

1) The free throw shooting was ugly in the North Carolina and Notre Dame game as the teams combined to go 15-for-34 from the line. The Tar Heels were 10-for-22 from the line while the Irish went 5-for-12. For two ACC teams to combine for 44 percent free-throw shooting is pretty pathetic.

2) Kansas State freshman Marcus Foster picked a bad time to have an off-night. The guard was held to 4-for-16 shooting and finished with nine points in a loss to Oklahoma State. It was only the sixth time this season that Foster has been held to single digits in points.

3) Pitt guard Cameron Wright was held scoreless and only took one field goal attempt in 19 minutes as he battled foul trouble in a loss to N.C. State. It was the first time this season Wright has been held scoreless.
