Late Night Snacks: Andrew Wiggins, Ryan Arcidiacono hit game-winners

Andrew Wiggins

GAME OF THE DAY: No. 9 Villanova 82, Providence 79 2OT

Ryan Arcidiacono came off a ball screen, and took advantage of a mismatch, taking Kadeem Batts to the rack for the layup and the foul. That 3-point play turned out to be the deciding factor in an exciting double overtime finish for No. 9 Villanova on the road. The Friars had one more chance to extend the game, but LaDontae Henton, who sent the game to overtime with a last-second three in regulation, front-rimmed his open 3-point attempt.

For Villanova, its a bounce-back win after its second blowout loss to Creighton. For Providence, a team on the bubble, this was a marquee win its resume needed. The Friars have a meeting with No. 11 Creighton on Mar. 8, but that is in Omaha.

IMPORTANT OUTCOMES

No. 17 Iowa State 85, No. 19 Texas 76: The Cyclones avenged a loss to the Longhorns with its Big 3 -- Melvin Ejim, DeAndre Kane and Georges Niang. Texas trails Kansas by two games in the Big 12 with a head-to-head matchup on Saturday.

No. 8 Kansas 64, Texas Tech 63: Joel Embiid and Andrew Wiggins scored late buckets, with Wiggins hitting a go-ahead basket with 1.7 seconds left, avoiding an upset in Lubbock.

No. 14 Virginia 57, Virginia Tech 53: The Cavaliers were in trouble for most of the game. Joe Harris struggled missing his first seven shots. One of the ACC’s best shooters gave UVA a 48-46 lead with a 3-pointer and the Cavaliers closed the game out from there. Virginia begins a three-game home stand, with the finale against No. 1 Syracuse, who led Virginia by half a game to start the day.

STARRED

Andrew Wiggins, Kansas: His aggressiveness set up a Joel Embiid dunk after he corralled Wiggins’ miss. That gave KU a one-point lead. After Texas Tech took the lead back, Wiggins got a hold of a loose ball for the last-second game-winner.

Melvin Ejim, DeAndre Kane, Georges Niang, Iowa State: The Iowa State trio shot a combined 57 percent from the field, accounting for 67 of the Cyclones’ 85 points.

Julius Randle, Kentucky: Added another double-double to the list with 25 points and 13 rebounds on the road against Ole Miss.

STRUGGLED

Javan Felix, Texas: Shot a dismal 6-of-22 and 4-of-15 from three for 16 points in a loss to Iowa State.

Richmond: The Spiders, who have seen players leave the program and been sidelined due to injuries in recent weeks, saw its tournament hopes take a big blow with a home loss to George Washington.

Jarell Eddie, Virginia Tech: The Hokies leading scorer shot 1-for-8 (1-for-7 from three) as Virginia Tech let an upset bid over rival Virginia slip away in the second half.
