Cuonzo Martin and Tennessee received bad news on Friday when it was announced freshman guard Robert Hubbs III would undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.
Hubbs, who missed the last two games due to the ailing shoulder, has been hindered with the injury for the entire season. In fact, his shoulder injury dates back to Hubbs’ senior year in high school.
In 12 games, Hubbs averaged five points and 1.5 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game.
Here’s the unfortunate thing: Hubbs likely won’t be eligible to receive a medical redshirt. The school can ask for a waiver from the NCAA, but the fact he has played in 12 games is too many to be eligible for the redshirt.
For a player to be eligible for a redshirt, he has to play in less than 30 percent of games in that season. Hubbs is over that 30 percent mark.
