High Point’s Allan Chaney recovering from defibrillator incident

Allan Chaney 2

High Point senior forward Allan Chaney is recovering after an on-court incident with his defibrillator going off forced Chaney to leave last Sunday’s home game against Wofford.

The 6-foot-9 forward missed two years after being diagnosed viral myocarditis -- an inflammation of the heart -- and had the defibrillator installed in November of 2011.

In Sunday’s game, Chaney’s defibrillator went off for the the first time and he left the game for precautionary reasons.

Chaney spoke with The Sporting News’ Ryan Fagan and told him what the experience was like:

“It’s just an unfortunate thing,” Chaney said to Fagan. “But I thank God that I’m not dead. That’s how I’m looking at it.”

After halftime, Chaney watched the game from the bench and he’ll go to get examined and figure out more with doctors early this week.

Chaney was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA before this season and averaged 18.3 points, 9.8 rebounds this season after averaging 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game last season.
