Washington has landed Robert Upshaw, a former top 50 recruit that spent last season at Fresno State.

“I had a nice visit with both Washington and Oregon,” Upshaw told ESPN.com. “I just felt like Washington was a better fit for me as a player. I liked it there, I felt comfortable and am looking forward to a new start.”

Upshaw was originally signed to Kansas State, but he was smart enough not to sign an NLI, eventually opting out of a grant-in-aid agreement when former head coach Frank Martin left for South Carolina. Upshaw instead enrolled with the Bulldogs, where he averaged 4.1 points, 3.8 boards and 1.9 blocks, but he was kicked off the team in August.

Upshaw had an up-and-down year as a freshman. He injured his knee early in the year, and between that and two suspensions during the season, he only played in 22 games. But his promise, especially on the defensive side of the ball, was visible.

Upshaw will have to sit out the 2013-2014 season. He has three seasons of eligibility left.
