While players can play basketball year round if they so choose, on occasion it’s beneficial to participate in other sports. That’s what members of the Tennessee men’s basketball team did last week, playing a game of flag football (7-on-7) at the football team’s indoor practice facility.

Seniors Jeronne Maymon and D’Montre Edwards were the captains, with Maymon’s team winning by the final score of 28-20. And for those who may be wondering, yes Maymon did play. That’s certainly a good sign for head coach Cuonzo Martin, especially when considering Maymon’s expectation that he would be 100% by the end of this month.

Adding a healthy Maymon (12.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg in 2011-12) to a rotation that includes forwards Edwards and Jarnell Stokes and guards Antonio Barton (transferred in from Memphis) and Jordan McRae should make the Volunteers a threat to reach the NCAA tournament.

Tennessee also adds three freshmen to the mix, with shooting guard Robert Hubbs being the one of the nation’s best freshmen at his position.
