Although he is no longer the head coach of the Connecticut men’s basketball team, Jim Calhoun is still a fixture on the Storrs campus. Calhoun retired prior to the commencements of the 2012-13 season as head coach of Connecticut after leading the Huskies for 26 seasons, and is now in the role of “Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics.”

On Sunday, September 22nd, Calhoun will be honored by the school and the state of Connecticut for all of his contributions and notoriety he brought to the Nutmeg State with “Heart of a Champion: A Tribute to Jim Calhoun.”

From the press release: The event will pay tribute to Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun and his indelible mark on the UConn community and the entire state of Connecticut during his time as men’s basketball coach from 1986-2012.

Former players who played for Calhoun during this stretch will be on hand to voice their thoughts and praise of the legendary coach. During his tenure as coach, Calhoun sent nearly 30 players to the NBA, so expect several of these Husky greats to be on hand for the tribute.

Prior to Calhoun’s coming to Connecticut, the school had reached just two NCAA Tournaments since 1967, and were hardly contenders from a national perspective. In his 26 seasons at the helm, however, Calhoun led the Huskies to 18 NCAA Tournaments and three National Championships.
