Pitt center Malcolm Gilbert, who played 93 minutes in 19 games last season and who was planning on redshirting this season, will transfer out of the program.

“Malcolm has asked for his release and has informed me that he wants to play with his brother,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said in a statement. “He‘s a great kid, hard worker and good player. We thank Malcolm for his contribution to our program over the last year and a half and wish him much success in the future.”

Malcolm’s brother Marcus plays for Fairfield and is a year younger than him.

Gilbert is the fifth player to transfer out of the Pitt program in the last 20 months: JJ Richardson left in April of 2011 for Houston; Khem Birch transferred to UNLV in the middle of last season; Isaiah Epps left for Monroe C.C in the spring; and John Johnson transferred to Penn State last month.
