Minnesota will be without the services of guard Wally Ellenson for six to eight weeks after the freshman broke his hand in practice this week.

According to Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith, Ellenson’s shooting hand was caught in a teammate’s jersey during practice, causing the injury.

Ellenson, a 6-4, 200-pound native of Wisconsin, could now possibly redshirt, according to Smith.

The freshman was expected to be a key reserve for the Gophers this season, backing up Joe Coleman and Austin Hollins. As a high school senior, Ellenson averaged 20.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

In Ellenson’s absence, Minnesota defeated Division II Minnesota State Thursday night in an exhibition. Coleman’s 21 points keyed the 81-56 victory.

Minnesota begins its regular season schedule against American University on Nov. 9.
