Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich announced on Tuesday that the school has agreed to a contract extension with Rick Pitino that would keep the coach under contract through the 2021-2022 season.

Pitino is currently in his 11th season with the Cardinals, and his program has probably never been better.

He’s coming off of a surprise run to last year’s Final Four, he’s got a consensus top three team returning, and there is enough young talent on his roster that the Cardinals should be Final Four contenders for quite some time.

“He’s a young guy, I’ve said it many times, he might be 60 but he’s going on 35, maybe even younger than that,” Jurich said. “He’s got an incredible amount of energy, and he’s worked extremely hard. We just love the direction this program is going. I’d really like to see him continue on as long as he possibly can.”

Pitino will be 70 in 2022.

Pitino is 274-106 as Louisville’s head coach and has a career record of 629-234 in 27 years at the college level.
