Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has secured his third commitment from the Class of 2013, as Philadelphia native BJ Johnson has committed to the Orange, multiple outlets are now reporting.
Johnson is the next in a long line of Philadelphia prospects to sign with Syracuse, including in recent years Scoop Jardine, Rakeem Christmas, and Dion Waiters.
The 6-7, 165-pound Johnson chose the Orange over Rutgers, Temple, and Villanova.
“Upside” is the key word for Johnson, who is still young for his class and has the athleticism and uniqueness as a lefty to leave the door open for major development possibilities down the road.
On the AAU circuit this summer, Johnson played alongside Arizona commit Rondae Jefferson on Team Final, a Nike-affiliated team.
He is a fringe top-150 prospect and under the right coaching staff and player development personnel, there is significant room for improvement.
Johnson joins point guard Tyler Ennis and center Chinonso Obokoh as members of Jim Boeheim’s 2013 class so far.
This 2013 class will follow an elite two-man group that Boeheim will bring to the court this fall, which is comprised of big man DaJuan Coleman and forward Jerami Grant.
The Orange open their season on Nov. 9 on the USS Midway against San Diego State.
