Former Memphis guard Charles Carmouche transfers to LSU, is eligible to play right away

Former Memphis and University of New Orleans guard Charles Carmouche has enrolled at LSU and will be eligible to play with the Tigers at the start of the 2012-13 season, the school announced Saturday.

Carmouche, a 6-3, 183-pound native of Louisiana, played two seasons at Memphis and two at New Orleans, but was granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA, effectively giving him a fifth year of eligibility.

Because he attained his degree from Memphis, he is eligible right away to play for coach Johnny Jones and the Tigers at the start of the season under the graduate transfer rule.

“We’re excited to have Charles as part of our LSU basketball program,” Jones said in a statement. “He has an ability to defend and a knack for scoring. With his experience, Charles brings a leadership and a presence to our team that we need heading into the start of preseason workouts.”

Over the course of his college career, Carmouche averaged 7.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.

LSU finished last season with an overall record of 18-15, including 7-9 in the SEC. The Tigers lost in the first round of the NIT to Oregon.

When they take the floor for the start of the 2012-13 season, it will be the first under the new head coach, Jones, who comes to LSU after more than a decade at North Texas.
