Former Indiana guard Ron Patterson will take prep year at Brewster Academy

Ron Patterson

Ron Patterson, formerly a freshman guard at Indiana who did not qualify academically at the school, will take a prep year at Brewster Academy (N.H.), Patterson tweeted late Monday night.

“I think he just sat down with his family and they felt like that was just the best otion for him to just get each component, his game and the academic side of it ready,” Patterson’s AAU coach Chris Hawkins told HoosiersHQ.com. “The plan is for him to take advantage of everything they can do for him up there. Once he sets foot on another campus, he’ll be ready to go.”

Patterson was a full qualifier and made his way through the NCAA clearinghouse, but did not meet academic standards required for admission to Indiana.

The Indiana native graduated from Broad Ripple HS (Ind.) as the school’s all-time leading scorer and averaged 18.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game as a senior in 2011-12.

According to reports, Indiana is not a likely destination for Patterson once he completes his year with Brewster due to limited scholarship spots in 2013. His departure cut Indiana’s overbooked 2012 scholarship list down to 13.

He had the opportunity to play immediately at another Division I school, having drawn interest from schools that include Xavier, Illinois, Marquette, Kansas State, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, and Providence, according to Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs.com.

Brewster is a perennial powerhouse, having gone 33-1 in 2011-12 and winning the National Prep School championship.
